Bring back Jake White?
The Tri-Nations is over now and South Africa picked up the wooden spoon. Is it time for Peter de Villiers to be relieved of his duties and the Springboks get in a new coach? I had thought that SARU would have fired de Villiers by now following the dreadful display of the team in the Tri-Nations and coupled with the de Villiers not being able to keep his mouth shut following his “100 percent” support statement for Bulls prop Bees Roux.
But SARU said on Sunday in a statement that it would hold its annual review of the Springboks’ performance in the Tri-Nations with De Villiers later this month. I can not see de Villiers keeping his job and the pressure has been added now that Jake White has come out and said he is willing to take over the job from de Villiers.
When I first heard of this, I was caught in two minds, is Jake White coming back the right thing for the Boks? White had his chance as a Bok coach and he did well, he won the World Cup after all. Should White rather be supporting de Villiers or is he doing the right thing by saying he wants his job back? Let us not forget that Jake White did not leave his Bok job on good terms so it would be interesting how SARU deals with this if White were to come back. Regan Hoskins was reportedly upset with some of the things White had to say about him in his autobiography, but the SARU president should not allow that to cloud his judgement and prevent him and his executive team from doing what is best for Springbok rugby.
Jake White has come out and said he wants his old job back - but only as an interim measure to help get Springbok rugby back on track before handing over to his former assistant, Allister Coetzee, after 2011. White has also highlighted that if he were to come back into the scene, he would come with former Australia coach Eddie Jones, who was on White’s technical staff in 2007.
What are your thoughts about Jake White taking over from Peter de Villiers? Or should SARU stick with de Villers?
